Choosing a Home – Make a List and Be Ready to Compromise
Looking for a home is an exciting experience, but it can also be stressful. To be confident in making the right decision, it helps to spend time getting to know which features have the highest personal priority.
Make a list of desired home features and be ready to compromise. Prioritize the features that are must haves, nice to haves, and ones to avoid. Home features like closet space, kitchen layout, and outdoor living space are all things that make a house ideal. What is desirable for one person may not be right for another. Making a list and rating the features with a numeric scale will help to compare homes.
Selection of a neighborhood is also key to choosing a home. Make a list of things about the location that are important and rate each one. There are many aspects to consider; make sure to think ahead for five to seven years. Here are some items to include:
- Commute time
- Distance to shopping, parks, restaurants and medical care
- School district preference
- Traffic flow on street
- Value of nearby homes
There are times when the ideal home will become available in a location that is not ideal, or vice versa—the location is wonderful, but the houses available are not. Having a list of features with the associated priority and value rating will help rank homes and neighborhoods to arrive at a decision.
