May Help Reduce Body Fat
A common goal that many people have is to reduce body fat, whether it’s for health reasons or just to fit better into their clothes. Red Light Therapy Healing Center regularly hears reports from clients at both of their locations that are seeing reductions in body fat through regular red-light treatments.
Red-light therapy delivers safe, concentrated wavelengths of therapeutic natural light to reduce oxidative stress and stimulate cellular energy production (adenosine triphosphate or ATP). The overall effect is to help the body power itself more effectively. Researchers also believe red-light therapy affects adipocytes, which are cells that store fat. This affect is thought to cause the lipids to disperse. A 2012 study in the International Journal of Endocrinology also showed that light can affect hunger levels, which could help prevent the buildup of extra fat before it even begins.
A 2011 study conducted on women ages 25-55 was divided into two groups, one doing treadmill exercise with twice weekly red-light therapy and the other group only doing treadmill exercise. Thermographic photographs showed changes in thigh circumference and cellulite that were greater in those that combined red-light therapy and exercise than those doing exercise alone.
Cosmetic Body Contouring
There are many therapies available to target fat, including body contouring or sculpting. Some of these therapies are surgical and pose potential risks. Red-light therapy has been proven to be an effective option that is completely natural and noninvasive. A double-blind, randomized study published in the Journal of Obesity Surgery in 2011 performed light therapy on participants for four weeks. The results showed a statistically significant reduction in waistline girth on those participants receiving red-light therapy. In a similar study published in Lasers in Surgery Medicine, a significant reduction in overall circumference on numerous parts of the body was shown.
Body Fat Reduction
A 2018 triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that people that are doing endurance training that are treated with red-light therapy prior to exercise showed a larger decrease in body fat than those who were treated with a placebo. A 2015 study showed the effects of red-light therapy and exercise on 64 obese women, ages 20 to 40. It concluded that red-light therapy and exercise together were more effective than just exercise alone in reducing fat mass. A study published in 2018, which also evaluated obese young women, found similar results.
