Makahiki Festival and Ke`Alohi Hula Competition
Join the Celebration November 10
Waimea Valley is hosting the seventh annual Makahiki Festival and Ke`Alohi Hula Competition on Saturday, November 10. This is a celebration of the ancient Hawaiian new year, known as Makahiki, that ran from approximately November through March. It was a time of peace, relaxation, games, hula and storytelling. You’re invited to bring in the Hawaiian new year at this annual festival featuring food, games, music and Ke`Alohi Hula — Hawaii’s only co-ed hula competition that brings together various hālau hula to vie for the title of “Ke`Alohi Hula o Waimea” or “The Brilliant Hula Dancer of Waimea.”
The opening ceremony will take place in the upper meadow and amphitheater at 9 a.m. followed by the hula competi-tion at 10 a.m. Hawaiian games, music, vendors, artisans, ono food and more will be available all day. Anyone wanting more information about the Ke`Alohi Hula can contact Budde Cabael at 808-638-5860 or by email at BCabael@WaimeaValley.net.
Location: Waimea Valley Road, Haleiwa. More information is available at WaimeaValley.net or call 808-638-7766.
