Beach Cleanup Planned for Westside Oahu

Aug 30, 2015 06:15PM

The third annual International Coastal Cleanup will be held on the west side of Oahu from Saturday, September 19, at 9:30 a.m., to Sunday, September 20, at 4 p.m. The beach cleanup is hosted by Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, Na Kama Kai, and Surfrider Foundation. The main location for check-in is Makua Beach. From there, the cleanup will take place from Keawa'ula Bay/Ka’ena Point to Kea’au Beach Park.

Debris is littering this fragile and important coastline, and the goal is to inspire more coastal stewardship for the area. In addition to cleaning the beaches, the aim is to educate participants about reducing the use of plastics and being more responsible in everyday consumption behaviors, and inspire people to clean up after every beach visit. Volunteers are asked to check-in at Makua Beach at 9:30 a.m. on either day. There will be a plastic-free lunch on Saturday after the cleanup with live music and games for the kids and other giveaways.
