each have unique personality traits and skills that make up who we are. We also
have our own ways of approaching life. The saying “when life gives you lemons”
is an adage about making the best out of a situation. But what is it that
causes one person to thrive under the same circumstances that crushes another?
There are parables about eggs, coffee beans and potatoes. Each faces adversity (boiling water) but comes away from the situation very differently. The potato was strong and robust when it went into the water but ended up soft. The eggs had only a thin protective shell protecting the soft insides. But when faced with the problem, it toughened up inside. The coffee grounds were different, they blended with the water and made itself and the water better. From this story it isn’t about our circumstances, but instead it’s about what we are made of. We would propose that October will be filled with opportunities to practice facing our own adversity with renewed determination to come away better.
This month’s edition has an article from Lani Kwon about “On Being a Parent with a Special Needs Child.” It offers tips for being mindful, coping and finding bliss. Our Healthy Kids section discusses how meditative training is helping kids thrive. Conscious Eating explores the global Slow Food movement and includes wonderful mouthwatering recipes. Fit Body looks at goat yoga and how these animal asanas are catching on across the globe. Green Living shares the concept of becoming a circular economy by purchasing second-hand items instead of new. This form of recycling has the potential to really turn the world around.
October culminates in Halloween where people dress in costumes and pretend to be someone else. Perhaps this year we can all use this time to also decide who we really want to be in the next year of our lives.
Please enjoy these articles and the rest of the October edition.
